Sunderland will compete in the Championship play-off final after Dan Ballard scored a dramatic extra-time goal, securing a victory over Coventry City.
After entering extra time with the aggregate score tied at 1-1, Ballard's header in the 122nd minute resulted in a 1-1 draw for the night and a 3-2 win on aggregate.
They will face Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on May 24, where the winner will be promoted to the Premier League.
Sunderland had won the first leg against Coventry, with striker Eliezer Mayenda taking advantage of a mistake by Milan van Ewijk to secure a 2-1 victory for the away team.
In the second leg, a goal from Ephron Mason-Clark in the 76th minute leveled the tie and sent the match into extra time.
It seemed neither team would score in extra time, with substitute Romaine Mundle coming closest with a low shot that was brilliantly blocked by Josh Eccles.
However, Sunderland earned a corner in stoppage time of the second half of extra time. Ballard found space in the penalty area and headed the ball in off the crossbar.
Ballard, who stood out in both matches, told Sky Sports that his goal is what "dreams are made of."
The former Arsenal youth academy player said: “It’s what dreams are made of, really. The fans today were absolutely incredible. It was just feeling like it wasn’t going to be our day, and all the lads were desperate to try and give them something to celebrate.
