The Voice after Taiwo Awoniyi's injury: One unreasonable rule should be changed
Taiwo Awoniyi, the Nottingham Forest star, had to go to the hospital for emergency surgery right away after getting hurt in a game against Leicester. Fans and others are telling the Premier League to look at a rule again. That rule is why Awoniyi ended up in the hospital for emergency surgery. The Nigerian forward got into a really bad situation during the match against Leicester at the weekend.
Awoniyi tried to reach a cross from Anthony Elanga. While doing that, he hit the goalpost hard and needed medical help fast. But here’s the thing: the offside flag went up way too late. Elanga was clearly offside, no question about it.
After getting hurt, Awoniyi needed a lot of treatment. This led to a strange argument between the club owner, Evangelos Marinakis, and the coach, Nuno Espirito Santo. The Greek businessman later put out a statement to clear things up.
Sky Sports reported that Awoniyi’s injury was so bad he had to rush to the hospital for surgery on his abdomen. Some fans think the late offside flag is to blame for the collision. The IFAB uses this rule. It lets the VAR decide close offside calls. But fans say it’s not a good idea.
The voice from fans, “Maybe now they’ll change that crazy rule that makes players keep playing. Everyone in the stadium knew Elanga was offside before Awoniyi and Buonanotte put themselves in danger.”
